First session for security guards
I always wanted to grow Samaan to as many people as possible. I thought just working with domestic help won't be enough, therefore I thought of including security guards of my society as well. I pitched this idea to the security supervisor, Narhari kaka. He was extremely interested in the idea and noticed the relevance that it holds to them. This is why I decided to schedule a session with them on 6th February, Sunday.
I started planning with the basics. These were: The concept and importance of financial literacy, needs vs wants, expenses vs investments, value for money and lastly, a basic overview of certain investment options that will suit their financial needs and goals. I prepared these with the help of my parents.
On the day of my presentation, I was extremely nervous as it was my first time talking in front of them and even talking in Marathi with a larger audience. I wanted to ensure that everything from my slides to the projector worked perfectly for which I took my parents help too.
I decided that the session would start at 7:30 since that is when the most number of people are available and at 7:20 all 8 of them were present and I really appreciated the punctuality and sincerity that they displayed. I started by asking their names and introduced myself and my initiative to them. My aim was to firstly simplify my content and also to give them a brief idea through this first session about what they would learn ahead.
Throughout the session, I wasn't entirely confident, but I still made it through pretty well. 2 of the security guards couldn't understand Marathi, so I had to repeat what I was saying in Hindi. I was absolutely not prepared for this but I could transition from the 2 languages pretty smoothly.
They were already quite knowledgeable and had begun taking greater care of their finances. Narhahri kaka (the supervisor) was exceptionally conscious of his finances and spending habits and applied the learnings to himself by talking about how he spent money on a bullet when his old 2-wheeler worked just fine. It was relieving to see that they were able to understand what was being taught. While it took some urging, they still participated actively too. Overall, I was satisfied with how the session took place and look forward to moving ahead with them.
